Monday's Muse...The Queen Diva

Inspiration has many forms. I often find it by reading, listening to music and playing with my children. But lately, my biggest inspiration has come from my favorite blogs and blogger friends. So, every Monday, I am going to take a moment to share the blogs and sites I enjoy visiting.

I will begin by thanking Elaine of HipNChic Designs who literally helped plant this seed. I have been trying to figure out how to incorporate some "link love" into my blog without sounding like an advertising board. I realized that all I need to do is focus on the blogs and people who make a difference in my life or the business.

Elaine has impacted my business greatly after meeting her only a month ago. She runs an organization for women entrepreneurs on the internet where we gather for business advice, promotion and general support. It is a wonderful community where I have met many women with similar goals. Elaine is a talented artist who owns HipNChic Designs, and she is a very sweet, compassionate woman with a great sense of humor (no wonder I like her). When I saw that she has five children (plus her 31-year old baby), I realized that she is truly phenomenal, if not a bit insane. I have two children and that's my limit while owning a business. If I had five, the only thing I would accomplish daily is feeding them, cleaning up after them and trying desperately to get some peace and quiet. So cheers to Elaine and thank you for being a great inspiration. Oh yeah, she finds time to blog too. I think she is a robot.

All right my friends, our new blog design is almost ready so we may be away or down and redirected (I am not sure about all of the moving technicalities), but we'll be back better looking and blogtastically functional shortly.

Friday Q&A - Advice For Rounder Shapes

Q: I am having a hard time finding clothes that fit well and look nice on me. I am short and more “round” with not much of a waist and about a size 10. I couldn’t find my “type” on your site and was hoping you could recommend some styles. I've been told to wear babydoll or empire waist styles but I look pregnant in them.

Currently, our site focuses on three major body types, Pear, Hourglass and V-shape. We also provide an area with fit solutions. We realize that there are a lot of body type variations we don't fully cover and are more than happy to help. I would describe your body type as an apple (or as you said, round) and depending on the babydoll or empire style, you add bulk to your thick waist. Try these recommendations and see if you find a better alternative:

Tops: V-neck and deep scoop neck styles will create the illusion of a waist. Higher collars will bring attention to your neck and face and away from the middle. Tunics work nicely if your torso is shorter and you have longer legs. Interest in the sleeves such as dolman, raglan or bell shaped can be flattering. Tight tops and sleeves do not work well. Jackets: Styles with structure and matte fabrics and nipped waists. Try a simple fitted blazer like this Stretch Broadcloth Jacket on sale for $58 from Max Studio:
Dresses: Shift dresses with princess seams or those that have a defined waist are polished and sleek. Try v-neck wrap dresses or scoop neck shirt dresses and anything cut on the diagonal. Strapless dresses can look amazing on your body type if you have nice shoulders and arms (or add a short cardigan). Keep the patterns medium sized in soft colors like this floral strapless dress $29 from ladylanguage:

Many thanks to Grandpa who was camera ready at the hospital. We couldn't wait to post these beautiful pictures of our new family member:

And the lovely family Michael, Jessica, Gwyneth and Holland the day after baby's birth.

Now how does a woman look that good the day after giving birth to a child? I must dig up a picture of myself the day after I gave birth because I swear I still had my gown on and looked like I had been run over by a bus!

If you can't tell, I am overcome with joy for them and look forward to cuddling a newborn baby in my arms again (a baby that I can give back when it starts to cry, that I do not have to nurse, and that I do not have to wake up with at 3am). Yes, my baby days are certainly over but I am delighted to live through Jessica. Thank you all for your kind comments and best wishes!

Beautiful Changes

While Michelle owns Lady Language and manages most of the daily operations, sisters Jessica and Stephanie have played a major role in keeping customers happy, managing shipments and selecting products for the store. As mentioned in another post, Jessica and Stephanie have actual lives that take them away from the business while Michelle is totally consumed and loving it.

This weekend, Jessica gave birth to her beautiful baby girl, Holland Paige, and our new family member at a healthy 7 lbs 14 ounces and 20 inches. We'll post some pics later this week. Jessica will be settling in to her role as a Stay at Home Mother and caring for the new baby and her sweet 3 1/2 year old Gwyneth (or as we like to call her, Foo Foo).

Stephanie is consumed with college life again, studying and writing endless reports. Between caring for her 3 children, school, and her current job at the hospital, she hardly has any time for fun.

Lady Language continues to grow and we are so grateful for all of our wonderful customers and fellow bloggers. We hope we can continue to live up to your expectations and have some great new things planned over the next few months. Michelle only hopes she has enough time and sanity to implement them!

The Perfect Handbag...Part Two

In Part One of our quest for the perfect handbag, we introduced you to timeless handbag styles and taught you how to spot affordable quality.

We each have our own personal taste to consider and many available choices. The next step is to identify a handbag style that works well with your lifestyle and body type.

The Most Common Handbag Styles

Totes - Rectangular with an open top and two strap handles in a range of sizes. Possibly the most versatile style and often referred to as bucket bags or shoppers.
Satchels - Inspired by a piece of luggage, it is a bag with a wide, flat bottom, zippered or clasped top and two handles/straps. Doctor and bowling style bags fit this category. They are often carried on the arm rather than the shoulder.
Hobo Bag - A casual style with a long strap, slouchy posture and is characterized by a crescent shape.
Shoulder Bag - A large bag with a strap that can be carried over the shoulder. Think messenger style.
Clutch - A bag with no handles that is carried under the arm. A classic evening bag style.

Identify a Need or Purpose

Every girl should have at least three types of bags at her disposal; a large tote, medium size carryall, and an evening clutch. The styles you choose should be based on your personal style and individual proportions. Once you have a few utilitarian bags at your disposal, you can add trendy and colorful choices to your collection.

My closet has a few trustworthy and timeless bags that will last a lifetime. I have young kids so I need a catch all type bag that can take a beating (okay, so it’s a diaper bag) - my canvas Skip Hop messenger style bag works perfectly and I can sling it over my shoulders comfortably. For everyday trips (i.e., the grocery store) I carry a medium size hobo. I also have a small silver evening clutch and black kiss lock wristlet for special occasions and a larger flat bottom suede tote for day trips without the kids. A large tote or satchel is also great for carrying work related items.

Find The Right Fit

If a handbag doesn’t look right, it may be drawing attention to an unflattering part of your body. The key is to carry the purse near your best feature and choose the right proportion based on your frame. The most universally flattering handbag fits comfortably under your arm and sits at the bend of your waist. Here are some additional tips for common figure issues.

Triangle Shape or Bottom Heavy - Choose a bag with a short strap that hangs high near your torso rather than low slung near the hips. Satchels and short handle totes work well. Textured bags with vertical lines will elongate your figure. They key is to draw attention to your smaller upper body.

V-Shaped or Top Heavy - Avoid carrying purses with short straps that hug your upper body. A bag with a long strap creates balance when it falls below the waist.

Plus Size or Curvy - A medium size bag in a structured style works best. Avoid large, baggy and rounded styles or too small styles. Satchels and clutches that are long and rectangular have a slimming effect. If you have a slim waist, choose a strap length that allows the purse to fall at your waist.

Petite - A purse that is too large will make you look even smaller. Your best choice is a small purse with a short strap. Keep the style minimal and clean so as not to overpower your frame.

Tall and Thin - Avoid small or flat bags that mimic your frame. Choose medium to large styles with volume or bold colors and fabric. Baggy, rounded styles add curves and contrast to a slim frame.

Hourglass - Any style works but keep in mind areas you want to draw attention away from.

These tips are not a prescription that must be followed exactly. They are guidelines to help assess your needs and teach you about handbag proportion in relation to your frame. When you consider this balance, it is easier to choose a handbag that makes you look good. You won't need to obsess over new handbags each season because you will have perfect choices in your closet.

**Q&A Friday on a Wednesday? What! Have we lost our minds? Don't worry, we will be back to our regular posting schedule next week. Truth is, I am still working on my handbag post for this week and the Q&A was more fun. So here goes:

Q: If you ever come across some sexy, fashionable vegan shoes, let me know, as it's pretty hard to find a pair that don't make me look like a hippy earth mama.

A: It's no picnic trying to find fashionable shoes if you are Vegan. Choosing an ethical and eco-friendly lifestyle, Vegans do not consume or use animal products of any kind. Not only do you need to find shoes made without ANY animal products, you also have to consider the environmental impact right down to the manufacturing of those shoes. When I think Vegan shoes, I think Earth brand as pictured above. I think hemp, flip flops, and gargantuan sandal foot. I don't think style, sex appeal or fashionable, but I have found hope.

If you want stylish, sexy vegan shoes without compromise, look no further than the collection at te casan, designed by Natalie Portman. They are not cheap, but are attainable at $200-$300 a pair. It's Tee Time

I was a tomboy growing up so jeans and t-shirts have always taken first place in my closet. And although my style has evolved to include more feminine silhouettes, I constantly scour the online stores for tees. Wearing a ridiculously printed tee is my way of having fun and being my whimsical self. I recently bought the pictured tee for $9 (it features little butterflies and leaves with snails and snail tracks plus the words SO SLOW). I decided to pair it with a fun little skirt instead of jeans.

Some of my other favorite tee finds lately include:

Friday Q&A - More Outfits Please

Q: Are you going to put together any Spring outfits for the store? It's nice to have the option and not worry about pulling stuff together on my own. Also, it would be cool to see some of your suggestions on the blog. Thanks!

A: We had great success with our Outfits in the store but to tell you the truth, it was a lot of maintenance for us. We had to track our stock on the items individually and in the outfits category - our current e-commerce platform couldn't do both. I know it seems lazy on our part, but until we upgrade to a more user friendly platform we may not be doing this for a while. Maybe I can incorporate outfit suggestions on the blog for those who enjoy it. Also, you should check out other blogs that focus completely on this subject such as Fashion Under $100,and The Frugal Fashionista. I am sure there are more out there, so if anyone has suggestions, please leave me a comment!

The Perfect Handbag...Part One

If this is your first time reading my blog, you should catch up on how I feel about expensive, designer clothing. The same goes for designer purses. I won’t pay big money for a name. I’ll pay for good design, quality and something I really love or enjoy using. A bag that makes me feel happy and confident and that doesn’t feel out of place with my overall look. I am very picky when it comes to purses and I realized this post requires three parts. The first part, featured herein, will help you identify quality and timeless style. The second part will further educate you on the different handbag shapes and what works well for your body type and style. And finally, the third post will include must-haves for your closet and my affordable choices to assist in your quest.

Study The Classic Icons

Many bags on the market reference the iconic classics of yesteryear. Hermes has some of the most steadfast and clean design influences found in the Kelly, Birkin, Bolide and more casual Le Trim. Other tried and true silhouettes include the Louis Vuitton Speedy and the classic Chanel single flap shoulder bag. If you must have the real deal, plan on saving your dollars and scour the vintage online stores, thrift shops and ebay. Modern day classics from Coach, Celine, Burberry, Gucci, Marc Jacobs , Furla, Fendi and Prada are also worth studying. Although quite expensive in their own right, they command a lesser price than the icons and provide a good reference. Sites like the Bag Snob and PurseBlog are solely dedicated to the subject of bag obsessing and are good resources for tracking the trends and identifying the real deal. Study the icons and look for the style translation in newer, less expensive bags.

Material Matters

In today’s market, many budget bags use affordable, durable PVC that can look as good as real leather. Other alternatives include nylon and canvas. The key is to choose a material that feels supple and has a substantial look. Very thin leather or plastic will cheapen the look of any bag no matter the price. Texture often makes a bag look more expensive so keep an eye out for quilted, crocodile and snake skin finishes that are tasteful. Consider durability if you opt for real leather over synthetic. Lambskin is soft, tears easily and often shows more abrasions whereas cowhide is tougher with a rough texture.

The Finishing Touches

Hardware is equally as important and makes a big difference in the overall bag aesthetic. Choose low luster trims - brushed, antique or brass gold instead of bright gold and shiny gunmetal instead of a white silver. The stitching should be uniform and not coming apart.

I just can't help myself - when I see this dress, available at ShopBop for a whopping $372, I think "yes, I have two boobs and two ovaries in approximately the same position as these large medallions on my dress". I think this pattern would work much better as a skirt.

I feel like I am taking part in a Rorshach test. What do you see? My husband sees a giant rattlesnake. My 4 year old daughter just points and laughs.

Friday Q&A - Cheap Handbags

Q: I bought the Silver City Handbag at your store and really love it. It's hard to find cheap, trendy purses that don't look gross but I get a ton of compliments on this one. I am anxiously awaiting your Spring arrivals and wonder if you will be carrying any similar styles or can recommend some other places to find these.

A: I really enjoyed the fact that the term "gross" was used by this customer because I feel that way about a lot of cheap or shall I say affordable handbags. We decided to carry a few last Fall to test the market and had a couple of successes including the Silver City Bag that sold out quickly. Truth is, I have a very difficult time choosing these bags because I am very picky about what I carry (not only in the store, but on my arm). Also, there are a ton of other handbag and accessory stores that focus entirely on this market and can offer you a better price because they buy larger quantities. We will have a few selections for Spring, but it may take some time to find the winners in a sea of "grossness".

I suggest you check out the following sites:
Shop Suey and Baghaus are two of my favorite stores carrying affordable, trendier pieces with a good selection. Several items mimic designer styles so be careful not to misrepresent (pass on the fake logos and imprints please).
Smart Bargains has great deals on affordable designs from Perlina, Adrienne Vittadini, and Sigrid Olsen - designers who are a step up from the cheap stuff but still under $100 on sale.
Coincidentally, Winona over at Daddy Likey beat me to the punch with a similar reader question this week.

Occasionally, I buy cheap handbags (usually if it's a trendier item), but I find that it is best to invest in a few good timeless bags. I have a post planned for next week about handbags that will allow me to elaborate a bit more on this subject. And, I know our readers will have something to say as they are smarter than your average purse buyer.

What is the story behind the name of your blog and nickname??

Lady Language is our business name so it seemed appropriate for the blog. There are so many online stores and we wanted a name that stood out and meant something more than "shophereboutique". We started the blog to provide fashion and shopping tips for customers and try to provide a realistic spin on the fashion world.

What has been your best, and worst, blogging experience??
We have met so many brilliant bloggers and genuinely nice people through blogging and don't have any bad experiences to report.

What do you want to happen to your blog in 2008???
Literally sat here staring at the screen for twenty minutes and couldn't think of one thing.

We Love To Clown Around

Stephanie said they were too long and made her look like a circus clown, then laughed hysterically. Jessica is 8 months pregnant and cannot possibly fit into them. I tried them and they were too short and definitely not flattering to my hip area. I wondered why I would intentionally hike my pants into my armpits. I asked a few other friends if they would try them...no thanks.

The High Waisted pant dilemma. They seem so cool and trendy, almost reminiscent of better days when a dance and song blessed every feature film. Truth is, the average female cannot wear them easily. Large hips? Sorry. Short waist or torso? No way. Pouch belly or big butt? Keep walking. Tall, slender, long legged, long torso, slim hipped, defined waist? Bingo! If the latter describes your figure, run...go get yourself a pair of high waisted pants fast! The other 95% of us? They're okay paired with a higher neck blouse or top and a long cardigan sweater or jacket.

Anyone else have an opinion on this trend? I'd love to know what you think!

My Fascination With Love

Known as one of the most controversial women rockers, Courtney Love is a resilient woman. I find beauty in some of her lyrics and sadness in her life. I admire her persistence and "who gives a shit" attitude, but deplore her rudeness. Still, I enjoy her rebellious and invigorating grunge-pop music and am fascinated by her life.

She was a product of divorce and there is speculation of drug abuse within her family. Her Father was a "Deadhead" who gave her LSD at four years old. Most of her childhood was spent traveling and living in various hippie communities and her mother often left Courtney in the care of others. As a young adult, she worked as a stripper to make ends meet. Her anger and addictiveness obviously stem from this unstable environment.

Quite possibly, much of her "angry girl" music was birthed from these early experiences and tortured relationships. I wonder about the lyrics in "Petals"...Tear the petals off of you/Make you tell the truth. And "Dying"...You promised, you promised me/I'm dying, I'm dying please - a soft, haunting lullaby that may invoke childhood memories?

I confess to buying every album Hole and Courtney Love have produced yet I have not witnessed her in concert (I don't want to be spit on). I love screaming the lyrics to "Miss World" while I am cleaning the house - I'm Miss World/Watch Me Break and Watch Me Burn/Nobody's listening my friend. And "Violet" - And the sky was made of Amethyst/And all the stars look just like little fish...You should learn when to go/You should learn how to say no...Go on take everything, take everything, I want you to. It's very cathartic if not a bit deranged on my part.

Many musicians write lyrics that strike a cord within their soul or speak of their experiences. I believe Love's music is a hauntingly violent, artistic portrayal of her life. Friday Q&A - Too Old For The Mini

Q: Can a 40 something woman in good shape wear a mini skirt or dress? I am afraid of looking like a teenager, but I see a ton of cute styles this season that I would really love to buy, so any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

A. A pressing question on the minds of many women over the age of 30 - the age in which most of us retire our legs to a life of hiding beneath knee length skirts and dresses. In my opinion, there are three questions to ask yourself to determine the answer. First, are your legs attractive? Saggy knees and cottage cheese thighs do not belong in a mini. Second, does the look fit your style, personality and the rest of your wardrobe? And third, are you comfortable wearing short skirts and dresses? If your answer is yes to all of these, keep reading for tips on the best way to wear a mini at your age. If you answered no to any of these, put the mini back on the rack.

How To Wear A Mini

1. Keep it Sophisticated

Shop for mini’s no less than two to three inches above the top of the knee (unless you have really great legs and want to show them off). Avoid tight fitting denim and leather. Please, no ruffles or sequined embellishments. Never wear a mini skirt to work!

2. Proportion is Key

Volume on top will counterbalance the shorter length to provide an appealing look. Billowy, sheer fabric, larger sleeved tops work well with mini skirts. A short shift dress looks great with tights and ballet flats as does a short skirt with a turtle neck and knee high flat boots. Never pair a tank top, low cut top or sexy stiletto heels with the mini at your age - you’ll just end up looking trampy.

3. Consider Wearability

The mini may look and feel great while standing in front of the mirror because it exudes a sense of liberation and youth. So move around and sit down before you make a decision. If you are not comfortable sitting or walking in it, then what’s the point? The trapeze and babydoll style mini dresses are feminine and cute, but can look too young - in a bad sort of way - on older women. I agree that some can pull it off nicely, but do you really want to look like you are trying to re-live your teens or twenties.

So what do our readers think about this dilemma? How do you feel about older women wearing short skirts? I am still trying to find an appropriate place to wear my electric blue tights and black mini dress. Some day, I tell you...some day I will.

Q: I am a 23 year old who likes to wear trendy clothing but I also have job as a law firm secretary and find that sometimes my choices aren’t appropriate. Most of the time I stare blankly into my closet and don’t have a thing to wear. I don’t have a ton of money to spend on a new wardrobe and I was wondering if you could give me some advice.

A: You need to build a base wardrobe with a few classic, timeless pieces. Then, you can mix color, accessories and trendier silhouettes with these basics to maintain your style. February is a great time to shop for pants, blazers and skirts because many stores mark down Winter apparel in preparation for Spring arrivals. You will find good quality pieces at up to 70% off.

Here is a list of my suggestions to get you started:

1. Basic trousers - Two pair, with a flat waist and straight or slight bootcut leg. Black should be your first choice, then brown and gray. Gabardine Dress Pant by Atelier and Daria Straight Leg trouser by BCBG.

2. Wool A-line skirt - A feminine and thigh concealing favorite that looks great with fitted jackets and tops. Try the Wool Pintuck Skirt by J Crew.

The New Bohemians

Often regarded as artsy and whimsical, the bohemian look is constantly being dissected and bastardized by the fashion world. Last year, I recall the term Foho, which I will loosely describe as the fashionista’s attempt to meld a shiny modern handbag or shoe for example, with a folksy broom skirt. Many celebrities were hot on the heels of this trend. This season, I am reading the term Boho Tech, in which the airy, ethnically printed bohemian style is mixed with structured, futuristic styling.

The dictionary defines bohemian as “a person with artistic or literary interests who disregards conventional standards of behavior”. As a child, my parent’s would exclaim that my younger brother was “acting like such a bohemian”. I always associated the word with being out of control and disrespectful.

I can see how bohemian translates to rebellion in fashion as designers use artistic expression as a vehicle to push the limits of fabric, color and the minds of those wondering how to incorporate the look into their current wardrobe. The fusion of two opposites to produce a positive design can yield stunning results.

The bohemian look this Spring focuses on Ikat prints and 60s silhouettes mixed with metallics and embellishments. To subtly introduce this look into your wardrobe, wear an Ikat print top with a pair of sleek trousers and structured jacket. Friday Q&A - Wearing Polka Dots

Q: Can I wear Polka Dots this season, or are they considered "out"?

A: Polka dots are a timeless print and really never go "out" of style. While it's true that designers sometimes need to give this print a rest in their seasonal line up, there is no reason why you have to follow suit. If the print is part of your personal style and you wear it well, moderation is the key. Pick one piece of clothing or accessory and go for it. I am partial to smaller polka dot prints and black and white as the larger prints can look childish or comical. I personally love it when a woman bucks the trends and wears what she likes, especially if she looks stunning. Besides, when everyone else is wearing the latest cookie cutter trend, you will have maintained your personal style despite what the magazines and stylists have to say!

A Brief History of the Polka Dot
The origin of the polka dot pattern may be left to our imagination as there isn't a single factual source. Possibly influenced by the Polish polka dance as it was done in a circular motion, it has been around since the 1880s. The polka dot inspired Walt Disney's Minnie Mouse and it was set into fashionable motion by "I Love Lucy" dresses and the "Isty Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" in the 1950s. The polka dot print has been a part of our pop culture and fashion landscape for over a half century. Andy Warhol used tiny polka dots in his paintings during the 1960s. Julia Roberts portrayed the classically prim effect of the polka dot dress during the 1980s in Pretty Woman and the Pipettes revived the polka dot trend for Britain around 2006 wearing their big, bold prints on stage.

Q: I visited your site recently and noticed you had a section on how to dress well for your body type. It was nice to see that resource and I was hoping you could give me some advice. I am naturally thin and have been all of my life. I eat and don't excercise much and I feel as if women resent me sometimes. Like I have nothing to worry about because I look good in anything. Maybe so, but I don't feel good in half of the things I wear and really need some help. Any suggestions to downplay a beanpole body type? Thanks...Meghan

A: Yes it is true that I don't get a lot of questions regarding this dilemma, but I can understand it all the same. With the obesity epidemic and everyone trying hard to lose weight, it must be tough being the thin one. It seems it is not your fault and just like women who want to camouflage big hips or chunky thighs, you want to camouflage your skinny. Lucky for you because your frame lends itself to an array of silhouettes many women only dream of wearing (we don't really hate you, we're just really jealous). You want to look for clothing with volume, print and fussy details. Here are some ideas:

1. Fabric

Choose structured fabrics that add form to your figure rather than clingy or light fabrics that show your figure. Shiny fabrics reflect light and can make you appear larger, and matte and darker fabrics will make you appear slimmer.
Tressa snakeskin taffeta skirt Not only do you have the volume of this skirt working for you, the snakeskin pattern and metallic fabric is substantial.
Alex is Cotton Top The trapeze style silhouette and stiff cotton fabric add dimension to a thin upper body.

2. Bold Prints and Color

Large, colorful prints can make big women look bigger. But in your case, they can be your best friend.

3. Volume

The Solution To Spanx...Part 3

It's 15 below here in the Midwest and all I want to do is drink hot chocolate and eat chocolate covered donuts (not the good kind...the kind that have way too many preservatives and are rock hard therefore surviving for many months in my pantry). My body is in hibernation for the long cold winter and my bones ache from the dry cold. It's difficult rousting my body in motion to perform any type of activity, including climbing the stairs to go to bed. I have been staying up too late, eating too much and moving my body too little. So I leave you with the last post in which the Solution To Spanx will be completed. I know what I should be doing, I just don't feel like doing it, okay? So here we go...

In our first post, we gave advice on how to better your diet to sustain your weight and live healthy. The second post covered exercise and keeping your body fit and now we are going to talk about the last three items in our Top 10 .

8. Get Enough Sleep and Reduce Stress

Lack of sleep and extra stress can make some people eat more. When you are tired your brain chemistry is off or something...okay, so I am too tired and hungry to research this one, so why don't you just head over to Web MD or Google it to get the facts. And stress...don't get me started. How does anyone function under severe stress and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

9. Wear Clothing Appropriate For Your Body Type

Many women could look 10 pounds lighter simply by wearing figure flattering styles. So for those of you who want to skip the dieting and exercise, learn how to use clothing to your advantage (and yes, this even works with swimsuits). Stay tuned for our Figure Flattery weekly feature for tips on how to look good in your clothing. Go ahead, keep eating those donuts.

10. Schedule time to exercise and plan your meals

The biggest obstacle to leading a healthy lifestyle is lack of planning. Find the best time of day to exercise. Don't force your body out of bed at 5am for a run if you are not a morning person. Plan your meals and shop with a list to reduce the "bad" foods in your pantry - you'll at least have an alternative to eating those donuts or making that last minute dinner trip through the drive through.

Would You Pay $895 For This?

I often look to designer fashion for inspiration, particularly when buying for the store. I can't help but cringe when I see the prices on many of these items - what goes through a woman's mind when purchasing such a piece? I don't get it. Even if I had $900 clams to blow on a chiffon tank top from Stella McCartney, I would not. Okay, take away a zero and MAYBE I would jump. I guess it is no different than buying expensive cars, handbags or TVs. But then again, I don't buy that stuff either. I have a 1997 Toyota Avalon that I hope survives another few years and our big screen TV from 1999 is a whopping 25 inches. Most of the clothing I acquire is thrifted, on sale at a huge discount (yes I do have some BCBG and Cynthia Steffe in my closet), or from affordable online boutiques.

I don't get emotional when it comes to purchasing clothing - I see a need, I fill a need. Although I do like to obsess about fashion (but it is more of an artistic obsession), I don't have to have the latest designer styles. So what goes through a woman's mind when she blows that kind of cash? Has anyone out there spent a small fortune on an article of clothing lately? The Solution To Spanx...Part 2

We are mid-way through January and it's frigid in the Midwest. The perfect time of year to huddle on the couch, watch football, drink beer and gobble chips (GO PACK). Forget squeezing into those running tights and sprinting around the block. This is the time of year we are happy and content...doing nothing at all. Exercise is a distant memory of Summer's past and will not catch up with us for at least a couple more months.

In our first post, we gave advice on how to better your diet to sustain your weight and live healthy. Now, we are going to talk about getting that swimsuit worthy physique. Items 4-7 on our Top 10 go hand in hand. If you want a rock hard body, the key is to MOVE YOUR BODY!

4. Lift weights
You lose muscle as you age, you gain weight as you age, and muscle burns more calories than fat , so wouldn't it make sense to build and maintain that muscle? If not purely for aesthetic purposes, then for strength later in life? I know many women refuse to pump iron because they think they will turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is simply not true for the average weight lifter (don't be scared by the picture - this woman is clearly on steroids, mega protein and intensive training). One of my favorite informational sites on weight training is BodyBuilding.com. And, if you are a women looking to develop a weight training routine to get lean (not bulky), you should read this article. The key is to get your muscles used to working hard. You can also try resistance training using your body weight or rubber bands if dumbbells are too hardcore. Muscles and Fitness is also another great resource for Women and Men.

5. Stretch your muscles
Staying limber is the key to preventing injury. Perform a stretching routine at least two to three times per week. Web MD is a trusted resource and you can learn more about basic stretching exercises here. For a dual approach, try Yoga or Pilates - not only will you stretch your muscles, you also gain resistance training benefits. About.com features a ton of resources on these exercises. And, as an avid reader of Yoga Journal, I highly recommend their website and magazine if you seek intermediate to advanced techniques and inspiration.

6. Perform aerobic activity
To burn excess calories and keep your heart fit, aerobic activity is required. Three to four times per week for 30 minutes is adequate to maintain, but additional sessions may be necessary to lose weight. If you get bored with a full 30 minutes, break it up into 2 or 3 short bursts during the day. Dance, climb the stairs, jump rope, bicycle, walk, jog, run, karate, kick box... any activity that increases and sustains your heart rate for that period of time. Web MD has a comprehensive health and fitness section that is worth your attention.

7. Move more and sit less
Yeah, duh! It's no secret that you burn more calories standing than you do sitting. Small changes to your daily routine can have a huge impact on your weight and overall health. Ditch the drive through at Starbucks and walk in. Park your car farther away from your destination to steal a brisk walk. Take the stairs instead of the elevator...you get the idea.

Moving your body and eating healthy should be part of a daily routine. Decide what is best for your lifestyle and seek advice from your doctor or a professional trainer before you begin. It is extremely important that you know how to correctly execute stretching and weight lifting movements to prevent injury. Now get your butt off the couch and get moving!

Are You a Fashion Slave?

Being a slave to fashion is never on trend. And I quote directly from a Marilyn Kirschner Daily Fashion Report:

“And for heaven’s sake, please don’t listen to those so called ‘fashion experts’ who wish to remind their audience that there are certain fashion ‘rules’ to obey: like not wearing white after Labor Day; or the one that says if you wore a trend the first time…don’t wear it again.. What a laugh and what a stupid rule. Any way, rules are meant to be broken, n’est past?”

In the end, it’s between you and your closet, what you can and can’t afford and what YOU like. It’s nobody’s business what you choose to wear. Your clothes should make you feel beautiful and fit well with your body type and personal style. If you are comfortable wearing white in Winter, go ahead. If those skinny jeans look undeniably perfect on your long limbs, more power to you. Keep the fashion rules and trends in your peripheral and bring the focus on yourself to the front. I think the world is aglow with women who know fashion and style just as well, if not better, than any paid expert or stylist.

How can you tell if you are a fashion slave?

1. Nothing in your closet matches or works well together.
2. You leave the house looking like Victoria Beckham
3. Your favorite T-shirt has a designer name stamped on the front (or back).
4. Your friends comment on your "interesting" look all the time.
5. You are always uncomfortable in your clothing and never have anything appropriate to wear.

The Depths of a Shallow Fashion Blog

There is more to us than meets the eye. The Lady is comprised of three sisters, Michelle, Jessica, and Stephanie. We are all Moms and have almost 7 children between the ages of 0 and 11 among us. Michelle is the mind behind the Lady - 90% of the content swims in her head. Jessica and Stephanie have actual lives. They don’t live in the E-world, but they get sucked in to help. Jessica is ambitiously pursuing two careers, is pregnant (due in March) and plans to become a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom). Stephanie has three children in elementary school and is in college full-time pursuing her dream of becoming a nurse.

So what drives us further into the depths of fashion? Ask Michelle: "To be a part of the fashion world has been my dream since the age of 12. I never pursued a career in fashion because my parent’s were not fond of the idea, so I swayed towards computers because I had a knack for learning code and teaching software. I continued to study fashion like a fiend and it has always been a part of my life - not in a “I look better than you way”, but in an artistic “the color and drape of your dress is striking” kind of way. I admire women who have personal style and understand what looks great on their body, not an idealized form. It is always better to follow your inner fashion mind instead of celebrity looks and fads."

I sketched fashion designs when I was a teen (it’s okay to laugh, it was the 80s and I was only 13):I paint with acrylics (I started painting in 2001 right after the birth of my son). The building was my first attempt (I hated this painting). I actually sold my second painting (a field of tulips) and wish I had kept it.

I write songs and poetry but will not completely reveal myself to the public!

Art, music and fashion will always move my soul. I love expressing emotion, movement and contrast through painting and sketching. I also enjoy finding that perfect dress or pair of shoes. Aruba, Jamaica, Oooh I Wanna Take You To Bermuda...

It only takes a few chance happenings for me to write about something and lately I have been reading about Men and their shorts. The Iron Chic says that men wearing shorts is a deal breaker. This is how it started. Then a few days later, I saw an ad in a magazine dating back to the 80s featuring those awful cut-off denim Bermudas. Anyone remember the frayed acid washed looked? Yes, it was frightening (and the mullet wasn't too cool either). The next evening, I was reading about 1950s fashion and noticed that Bermuda shorts became very popular in America during this decade.

As most of you know, we are LADY Language, and don’t usually talk about Men’s fashion around here. But, as a service to all of those women who have husbands, brothers, sons (or if you are one of our fabulous male readers - we love to see your smiling faces), here are the rules for wearing Bermuda shorts:

1. Absolutely no Bermuda shorts with a blazer - don't even think about wearing this to work. You might as well just wear your boxer shorts as they have the same effect.
2. PLEASE, do not pair them with knee high socks and dress shoes or loafers.
3. DO NOT sport your bare feet in loafers while wearing Bermudas (refer to #2 regarding socks).
4. I know it’s hard to hear, but you cannot, and I repeat CANNOT wear them with a cardigan sweater.
5. Ditch the jean short Bermudas, please...I can’t beg you enough. If these become popular again, I am seriously gonna cry (the way I did when I saw the Water Horse).

But alas, there is hope. Here are the circumstances in which you MAY wear them:

1. You carry a man purse.
2. You are over 55 and live in Florida or Arizona.
3. You are younger than 18.
4. You are a member of the British Military
5. You golf or play tennis (yeah, it’s okay Dad)
6. You live in Bermuda (seriously, it is the Male dress code - they wear them 3 inches above the knee and this is the trend origin).

None of the above apply to you but you still wear 'em? So does my husband. No worries, please just wear a casual shirt or tee shirt and be sure they AT LEAST go down to the top of your knee. DO NOT wear them mid-thigh...no...it is not sexy. Save the short shorts for the gym...a sweaty guy with bulging thighs in short shorts at the gym...now that is sexy.

Our Favorite Things...The Pencil Skirt

Did you know that the modern day pencil skirt was inspired by an early fashion torture device named the hobble skirt? First appearing as a long skirt with a strap around the ankles in the 1880s, and later becoming popular in the 1910s by Paul Poiret, the hobble skirt featured an extremely tight hem. Hobble refers to the limited movement one experiences while wearing the skirt, though alternatively, the hobble was a strap used around the legs of a horse to restrict movement.

One can only imagine why this style became so popular again in the 1950s. Women did not wear pants and were supposed to act ladylike and this skirt did the trick. I think it was a Father’s dream outfit for his daughter as it shortens the stride rendering the wearer unable to run and allows virtually no leg spreading or any object to pass between the legs. No thoughts of trying out for the track team or necking in the back of Bobby’s parent’s Bel Air.

Regardless of the history, the pencil skirt embodies Parisian style mixed with beatnik cool. It is a timeless style that is constantly recycled. Any woman can wear it (especially the Spanx version with the modern day corset). This type of skirt elongates the legs and creates a sleek silhouette. The key to a flattering fit is to wear it slightly above the knee to not less than an inch and a half below the knee. If you have great legs, wear it as high as mid-thigh. If you have shorter legs, wear it with classic 2 inch heels, low vamp, and pointy toe.

The Solution To Spanx...Part 1

So you spent a good portion of the holiday season hanging out with friends and family, avoiding excercise, and eating way too much food? Join the club. Now comes the wake up call. Another year has passed and a new one is beginning. Are you happy with your body and how you look in your clothing? Do you need a jump start to get you on the path to better health? As promised, we will share our Top 10 plus a few extra tips to get you moving through the month of January. Buh bye Spanx!

Our first three tips involve some simple modifications to your diet. Focus on what's going into your body and pay attention to ingredients:

1. Eliminate refined sugar and sugar additives in your diet. The average person should not consume more than 12 teaspoons of sugar per day. Consuming too much has been linked to obesity, cancer, diabetes and other health issues. The simplest approach to kicking this habit is by cutting out all high sugar, low nutrient foods. For example, soda and fruit drinks, sweet tea, and candy. An occasional treat is permitted, just don't include these items in your daily meal planning. Also, pay attention to added sugar in your foods especially cereals, salad dressing, and sauces. If sugar is the first ingredient, pass it by, especially if it is high fructose corn syryp. Other sugar additives include maltose, sucrose, dextrose, fructose and molasses.

2. Add protein to each meal and you won't be hungry in an hour. It takes your body longer to digest and process protein and we use it more readily than other nutrients to build muscles and repair tissue. Meat is an obvious source of protein, but you can also get it from fish, nuts, beans, eggs, dairy products (especially cottage cheese). The average active person needs about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day.

3. Reduce or eliminate processed carbohydrates (yes, sugar is a carb). You've heard it many times before - don't fill up on bread or chips before your meal particularly if it is made with white flour. These types of carbs are easily converted to sugar in the body and that sugar is stored as triglycerides (and we're not talking about the good kind). Look for bread and pasta made with whole grain and learn to like it. If you can't live without the good stuff, reduce your carbohydrate intake by 1/3 - 1/2 at each meal and fill up on fruits, vegetables and protein instead (for example, have a 1/2 cup of white rice with your chicken instead of a full cup).

We hope these tips will get you off to a good start and be sure to check with your doctor if you have any health concerns. Web MD is a wonderful resource for healthy eating and is well trusted. HelpGuide.org also has another great resource for healthy eating. We are not health experts (remember, fashion is our penchant) but we do take care of our bodies and know quite a bit about staying in shape. And say goodbye to my 4 inch patent leather, peep toe heels...at least when I am in public with my husband. Needless to say our New Year's Eve did not go as planned. The shoes I so desperately searched for and found were not worn (as I towered 3 inches above my husband, he informed me that he would never be seen with me in public wearing those, but they are okay in the privacy of our...umm...bedroom). Then I felt a bit awkward...I guess you could say manly. Standing 6 foot 3 beside my husband, I felt like I could pick him up and carry him away. Yes, I think two inches is definitely my height limit on shoes. I did not wear the dress I was planning or my electric blue tights, but opted for a classy pair of black trousers, a Rebecca Beeson v-neck top, holiday cardigan and black ballet flats...boring but comfortable.

We had an awful, overpriced dinner at a restaurant we frequent. My crab legs were ice cold, the service was slow and the entertainment scheduled for 8pm was just walking in the door at 9:10. My son was disappointed that he did not get to hear one of his favorite singers, Lucas Cates, (but at least he got to say hello to him as we were walking out the door). We were home by 9:30 and the kids were asleep by 10. The rest of the night consisted of drinking a bottle of champagne and watching the Simpsons Movie and the last 5 minutes of the Time's Square New Year's Eve special. It's a good thing we stayed home, otherwise, I would have missed Mariah Carey in her annual bare-it-all costume (the 2006 ensemble is pictured above, courtesy IMB - because I can't find a pic yet of this year). Can someone please tell her that her voice is really all she needs and to put some clothes on? Best Wishes to you all in the New Year!

How I Got Rid Of My $645 Obsession For $30

I too often read about fashionable women in their Christian Louboutin boots or their Prada heels and cringe at the thought of spending the cash to obtain these items. Can you imaging shelling out $890 for a pair of Louboutin Seude Ankle Boots? Or $590 for a pair of Prada Satin & Suede T-Strap Sandals? Not me...at least not yet (those Prada T-Straps are pretty divine though- please someone slap me and take away my credit card!).

There is a cure for the ailment that is the shoe obsession and it is perfectly normal to drool over your favorite high end designer shoes (I'll even admit to cutting out pictures and keeping them in a folder for later reference...I know it's VERY scary). Now, take those images or pictures and bargain hunt. Tell yourself that you will find a similar, alternate, and less expensive pair somewhere, someday and keep your eyes peeled. If you have a clear mission, if you are relentless, and if you have time, seek and you will find. Try your local thift stores, or off-price stores such T.J. Maxx, Nordstrom Rack, Filene's Basement, Marshalls, or online shoe stores such as PlanetShoes, OnlineShoes.com, Shoes.com, ShoeMall.

Don't make the mistake of buying "cheap" shoes that will inevitably hurt your feet. You will most likely have to spend $40-$120 on a decent pair (but then again, the bargains are out there). I recommend the following brands that emulate the high priced designer looks for a fraction of the cost: AK Anne Klein, Bobbi Blu, BCBGirls, Kenneth Cole Reaction, Naturalizer, Steve Madden, Seychelles,

In October of this year, I needed (okay, WANTED) a pair of peep-toe patent leather shoes. I knew I couldn't afford the $645 pair of Fendi's that I fell in love with, so I cut out the picture, obsessed and blogged about them and kept my eyes open. And lo and behold, with less than two weeks left to New Year's Eve (when I planned to wear the shoes), I scored a pair of Steve Madden peep-toe patent leather shoes for $30 at a local T.J Maxx. I am looking forward to standing 6 foot 3 inches (a good 3 inches above my husband a la Katie Holmes style) this New Year's Eve. Are they comfortable? I'll let you know after I walk and dance away the night in them. And, you can get the same pair (pictured above) at SmartBargains for $60 - still a decent deal and also available in Red and Silver.

And now I can happily wait at least three months before obsessing over Spring and Summer shoe styles! But, while we are on the subject, it is the dead of Winter in the Midwest and I could use some new boots...

Confessions of a Fashion Victim

As the holiday season is upon us, we are finding ourselves double booked with obligations and parties. In an attempt to make two parties last Friday, my husband and I started out the evening at our daughters preschool holiday gathering. We arrived very overdressed for Chuckie Cheese as our next stop was my office holiday party. A sit down dinner with "casino night" after.

I found the perfect black dress, red heels as pictured and of course my favorite Juliet Jewelry. I looked great.

In order to make the evening flow we accepted some help from Nana and Papa and had taken every detail into account in planning and packing. This all unraveled when shortly after arriving at Chuckie Cheese, my adorable three year old daughter has an "accident" and needed a change of pants.

No problem, as I mentioned, I was totally prepared. As I ran out to our car in the dark parking lot I hit a patch of ice landed face first on the pavement.

My palms were instantly shredded and bleeding. I tore a hole in my stockings and the skin on my knee. Most of my weight landed on my cheek bone. It started as a large egg and has now progressed into a pretty purple shiner. I was wearing a winter white wool coat that was instantly dirty.

I was initially very shaken up. I wanted to cry and go home. Considering the planning that went into the evening, I did pull myself together. We made it to my office party after a stop at the drug store for pantyhose.

This is where I should tell you I am seven months pregnant and had no business wearing heels, nor running in them! Anyway, baby and I are fine. I am a little embarrassed but have enjoyed a few laughs over the whole scene.

I Didn't Need To Read That

I usually wonder what all the fuss is over celebrities. Then I find myself reading the latest write up on Victoria Beckham in Elle Magazine (January 2008). The majority of it is annoying. Detailed descriptions of what she is wearing and how her mansion is so beautifully decorated. I don't need to read that she was wearing a t-shirt, and I quote "snug enough to reveal the outline of her nipples". Huh? I had to take a second glance at the cover to make sure I wasn't reading Maxim Magazine. She claims that we don't have to spend a lot of money to look good and that it is all about being sensible and mixing and matching. So then I look at the fashion spread featuring a pair of $295 sunglasses, $695 shoes and $5,520 jacket. I see nothing affordable about this. I want to see her wearing a pair of $15 sunglasses, $75 pair of shoes, and a $112 jacket. Now that is affordable and attainable fashion.

The truth is, I have always liked Victoria because I believe there is more depth to her than all of this primping and posing. She was raised by a modest family who worked hard for a living. They taught her poise and manners and she has carried this into her adult life. She seems to be a smart business women (aside from the affordable fashion misshap) and is actually quite down to earth. We could all learn a lesson from the lovely Mrs. Beckham. She admittedly claims to be "not good at anything". That is refreshing to hear because I am really not that good at anything either. And, I am definitely not very good at enduring childhood trauma, joining a pop group sensation, marrying an iconic soccer player, becoming filthy rich, and starting my own clothing and makeup line.

Can you imagine her as a child all awkward and pimply with mean girls launching stones in her direction? Yeah...it happened, and I bet the girls that threw stones were huddling together at her latest concert hoping she wouldn't spy them (or maybe jumping up and down and stupidly screaming "I went to school with her!"). Kids are so cruel sometimes (especially girls). So let this all be a lesson to all you mean girls...that geeky, chubby, pimply chic could someday be the next Madonna...or Victoria Beckham. And, if you are truly interested in hearing some juicy details about the Spice Girls reunion tour, check out Daddy Likey - Winona was within 15 feet of Mr. Beckham. And, if you are curious about Mrs. Beckham, check out her recent appearance on Ellen. And yes, for some insane reason that I have yet to define in my subconscious mind, I am eternally jealous of anyone going to a Spice Girls reunion concert...and literally embarrassed for having to blog about it!

Dress Me Up

I will turn 36 in January and find myself stuck between wanting to wear the styles I did in my twenties and simultaneously trying to incorporate my increasingly older and more conservative (and yes, Mommish) side. Sometimes, I feel as if I am too old to wear youthful clothing, but not ready to let go of these clothing styles that I find so appealing. So, during a recent photo shoot I actually tried on some of our clothing and you know what...I kind of liked it.

I am wearing two of my favorite "surprise" outfits here (surprise meaning items I wouldn't usually pick for myself because they seem youngish). I paired the babydoll dress with a feminine blouse and a long grandpa cardigan and opaque tights. While the look is young, I felt comfortable and girly. Plus, the gold threaded, wool jumper is so comfortable, well-made and affordable. My shoe options are endless with this outfit - mary jane pumps, booties or high boots.

The sequin mini dress was a total surprise. I may actually wear this out for the New Year - it is so fun and sexy. I have long legs so the length is perfect and the fitted shape helps define my hourglass (almost pear shaped) figure. I would throw on some sleek heels (probably black to maintain a long, lean line) and carry a shawl for warmth (probably red or blue). So for those of you out there in my situation, give it a try. Remember to look for styles that showcase your favorite features (in my case, it would be the legs) and minimize your less favorite features.

I'd love to hear your honest opinions on dressing your age. Should I give up on the younger styles? And does anyone else find themselves in a similar situation?

Stop...Hammer Time

Oh yeah, THEY'RE BACK. Since the majority of us who work here are children of the 80s we just had to mention that Zubaz are back. For those of you who missed this fab trend, let us take a moment to fill you in...

The late 80s experienced an explosion in the Hip Hop, Rap movement and with it came an exuberant, dare to be different style. There were many break-out artists in this genre, but we recall M.C. Hammer taking center stage sporting the "Hammer Pants" or Zubaz. Belting out "Hammer Time" and "U Can't Touch This" he would side step in a plie type fashion across the stage in these baggy pants. Wikipidia refers to the "Hammer" pants as parachute pants. NO WAY! We were there and we know they are the Zubaz (although they were a bit silkier and baggier than the current version - maybe a cross between the Zubaz and parachute pants). We all wanted a pair (seriously, we did...well, maybe not Jessica). I think today most wear these pants for athletic endeavors (so in Hammer's case, dancing in these was very appropriate).

2. Egstastic - somewhere between fantastic and exciting in a four year old's mind.
3. Tire Iron Saurus - a close cousin of Tyrannosaurus Rex.
4. Candy Can - You know, those cane like candies that hang on the Christmas Tree.
5. Seestall - according to my four year old is an animal that is very strong and has to be covered with blankets so they won't "get dead" (should I be worried about this?)

I Want More Polyvore

So we stumbled across this cool site recently named Polyvore. In a nutshell, it is a web-based application that allows you to save items from a web-store and load these items into a virtual dressing room to create outfits. Pretty cool, huh? We thought so and we have been playing around with it for the past week. We'll be the first to admit that pulling together pictures of outfits on our site can be time consuming and painful (a lot of opening, editing, pasting, saving - not to mention loading into the web page and mapping the links). The beauty of Polyvore is that the application does all of this work. With a few clicks, it pulls in the image and adds it to your list. When you use the item in an outfit, the link and store information appear below. Plus, you can use items from multiple sites easily in one outfit. You can then embed your saved outfits in a web page or blog (below is the first outfit we created - if you click on it, you will be sent to our Polyvore page and you can view the outfit ingredients):

When Lady Language first entered the world of blogging we had no idea what to expect. We assumed it was a good way to interact with our customers in a social setting and have some fun. As we celebrate our first year anniversary, we would like to thank all of our wonderful customers and fellow bloggers. We have found many inspirations and have met many great friends in the past year. We promise we will update our blog roll in the next few months to reflect this because so many of you deserve a shout out. But now, we would like to share just a few of our biggest inspirations over the last year:

Chic Chemise - Susan is a grad student who authors this blog about t-shirts. I can't recall how we stumbled upon her, but we liked the name and the look. She was one of the first to give us some linky love (before we really knew what it was). If you are in search of good tee finds, check it out. And thank you Susan for making us feel loved when we were first lost in the blogging world!

Painfully Hip - Amber and Eve introduced us to the hipper world of blogging by featuring some of our Summer 2007 dresses on their blog (they commented that our boutique name sounded like a lesbian romance novel - hence, a beautiful friendship was born). These gals are are the real deal, honest, hard working ladies who deserve your attention. Amber is a good friend and has done a lot of graphic work for us and she totally rocks (good thing we're friends, otherwise we would be stalking her).

(Speaking of stalking) lets talk about Daddy Likey - Winona be her name, fun and fashion be her game. She is simply divine and one of the few bloggers that make us curl up on the floor begging for mercy because we can't stop laughing. She had us at layering (unfortunately I can no longer find this blog post and am feeling as if it may have been a dream?).

The Bag Snob - is an insightful snob who dangles expensive luxury handbags in front of our computer strained eyes on an almost a daily basis. Look no further to learn all there is to know about the world of fashionable (and expensive) handbags - drooling optional.

Dosh Dosh - is the premier blog about making money online. Maki's fresh insight and wisdom have been a huge resource to our business . His star shines brighter than Mars in August. My current hero.

And so many other bloggers that blow our minds with their writing and worldly wisdom. We have found that blogging is like reading a great novel full of undiscovered experiences, opinions and unchartered territory. We are happy to be a part of it.

Ugly shoes = Ugly dress. Seriously, your shoes can ruin the whole look of your outfit. I came across this lovely while browsing the Couture In The City blog. This dress was a winner from Project Runway, Rami Kashou. The shoes and the dress are both quite nice on their own, however, together the ensemble is a disaster. The chunky front strap and heel distract your attention away from the beautiful draping and also make the model look a bit planted. Maybe the stylist was going for the Grecian sandal look. I would have paired this goddess dress with a sleeker heel or at least one with a smaller strap. And, I would rock those heels with a mini. But then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

To Vest or Not to Vest

We are seeing a lot of vests on the fashion landscape lately. My pal Amber seems to like them and most recently thrifted a blue beauty and layered it over a cowl neck tunic. I have seen them layered on top of one another, and I have also seen them worn over a skimpy tank top or with nothing at all. I must admit, the vest reminds me of 80s alternative rock bands, but I was unable to find a good picture, so check out this 80s cover band I came across for a really good laugh. Vests are popular again due to the strong menswear influence this season but don't invest (ha,ha) too much as this may be a passing trend. Here are some of my current vested inspirations:

Weekly Dose of...Spice

Need a little extra spice in your life? I certainly don’t, especially not after seeing the new Spice Girls video - friends forever or whatever it's called. Don’t get me wrong, I like each spice girl as an individual, but collectively, I can’t stomach them. My 4 year old daughter has more talent than these five put together. But seriously, the song is insipid and the video is bordering on lesbian-eroticism (not that I even know much about this subject). Of course, only the skinny girls get to bare it all, hugging the walls in their bra with that come hither look. In reality, it seems that these lovely thirty-something gals are feeling the aging effects the same as the rest of us (thank you make-up and lighting!). And where did Victoria get that bondage outfit from - surely Marc Jacobs would think twice about using her as his runway model if he saw this. And what does Mr. Beckham think about his wife portraying such a slut - she has three children for pete’s sake (now I sound like my Mother). I actually like Victoria Beckham - I don’t know her, but she seems like a nice English girl who is just trying to live life and get paid. I admittedly liked the other Spice Girl songs back in the 90s and they really could have left it at that. BTW, my laptop speakers stopped working right after I launched this video. Coincidence? I think not.

7 Weird and Random Facts About Me

I didn't realize that joining NaBloPoMo would put us on the spot, but I have been tagged by Nancy Waldman, a wonderful writer in the NaBloPoMo network.

So my apologies to Jessica and Stephanie - I won't drag my beautiful sisters down with me, so I will post the facts about myself - yowza!

1. I only have half of my thyroid gland (I thought this interesting because the gal who tagged me, Nancy, stated she didn’t have a thyroid gland) - weird connection.

2. I own a clothing store yet my favorite outfit is sweats (you won’t find me ransacking the stockroom).

3. I like to swing (on the playground, in a swing)

4. I had a miscarriage - my very first pregnancy.

5. Some say I look like Helen Hunt? I’ll take it as a compliment, she’s alright.

6. I can go days without a shower and rarely wear makeup or fuss with my hair.

7. I am a very shy and private person and don’t like to talk about myself so it has been difficult coming up with these random facts!

It Makes Me Uncomfortable

I like Brooke Shields and I have followed her career from the Blue Lagoon, to the modeling days with Calvin Klein to the postpartum depression and Tom Cruise fiasco. I think she is a beautiful actress and person so it pains me to ask why in the world would she put herself in such an awful dress? It makes me nervous and uncomfortable - the material seems so silky and light - I fear that if she sits down the whole middle will bunch up into three definitive rolls and she will be fidgeting all night trying to smooth them out (at least that is what I would be doing). You see, I have issues with clothing and material that bunches around the middle, especially on gals that should be trying to create the illusion of a smaller waist. She would have been much better off wearing a sleek sheath to show off her shoulders or a deep v-neck fitted number to define the waist.

Oh The Colors You'll See

I have been reading way too much Dr. Suess lately and I shouldn't be aloud to post late at night. I think the mini milky way bars that I have stolen from the kids' trick-or-treat bags are making me semi-delirious. Anyway, I had a few questions regarding the leggings we featured in the black sweater dress post. So where online do you find almost any style and color in an opaque tight or spandex legging? Here are our faves:

1. We Love Colors - has by far the most extensive selection in styles, colors and patterns. For example, if you really wanted to freak someone out and damage their vision - these vertical, jagged striped tights accomplish both (ouch, I feel those milky ways coming up).
2. Hue - is where we found those great multi-color striped sweater tights.
3. American Apparel - duh, they always have the basics you crave.

Here we are already, another holiday season is upon us! I love everything about the next couple months. The preparation, the entertaining, the excuse to see friends and family and eat way more than we should. I love the whole shopping and gift giving part of the holidays keeping it simple, affordable and low stress. That's the practical side of me.

I'm not gonna lie, we live on a tight budget. I have learned to get creative with the season in my decorating and gift giving. I have fun with it. A part of the holidays I would like to embrace a little more this year is the "giving" aspect. As a mother, I want to show my daughter through example how to give from the heart. I am thinking of more than just gifts. Finding a couple charities and donating more than just dollars...because to be honest, when it comes down to it, that is my hang up. I don't have the money to hand over but I do have the heart.

I have a couple ideas so far. I would like to take all of the many hotel toiletries my husband has collected on his work travels and donate them to a local women's shelter along with some clothes I am ready to part with (but still fashionably acceptable, of course). Also, our family has a bunch of unused coats that can be put to good use this winter.

I would love to call on all of our blog friends in this pre-holiday time to share with each other creative ways we can spread some love over the next couple months. I know I would appreciate some tips and suggestions of ways we can easily give to others, even if we don't necessarily have the extra funds.

The Little Black Sweater Dress

Our new favorite, wear anywhere dress is a little black number from Necessary Objects. It's a soft, medium weight knit with 3/4 length bell sleeves and a ruched scoop neck. We love it because you can create so many looks from this roomy style. Here are some ideas:

1. Wear it loose with tights and high heels for those days when you are feeling a bit jiggly around the middle.
2. Belt it tight around the waist with a thick, bright colored (or animal print) belt to show off your hourglass curves.
4. Belted or not, add some leggings and ankle boots.
5. Get cozy and pair it with a light turtleneck, tights and knee high boots.
6. Wear a white, collared blouse underneath for an office ready look.

Flowers For The Bride

I have had years of experience in customer service of one type or another. I have worked in a couple local boutiques selling clothing and accessories and more recently I am at a dental office working with patients and insurance...boring!

I like to think I have a creative side and enjoy my time spent with Lady Language. I love helping people express their personal style, boost their confidence with a new look and match people up with a new favorite item. I am always on the lookout for a line that our customers would be excited for. My other creative outlet is helping a previous employer/friend at her floral and gift shop. Saturday mornings I help bring the special ingredients to brides and their weddings.

The special ingredients are the amazing flowers and accessories we use to personalize the wedding and reception sites. Some of these events are only a couple months in the making, most are a year or more. I love being a part of this because I get an insight to the bride and grooms personal tastes. And let me tell you, the bigger the budget does not always mean better. I have seen some fabulous events on a shoe string and lots of creativity.

After we pack everything up from the store the bride and attendants are usually our first stop. This is my favorite because I get a glimpse of the bride and her dress. The best part is handing her the bouquet. This is the centerpiece for the day and besides the dress, says the most about the brides style and personality. I find myself holding back tears as they fall in love with it. Recently, I presented a bride with her bouquet. The base was adorned with her late Nana's jewelery. That was a Kleenex moment. I was crushed a couple weeks ago when I arrived at the bridal suite with the bouquet I so carefully tended to on the drive over, the mother wouldn't let me in to give it to bride! It was then I realized how much I enjoyed that part of my service.

I am reflecting on this because yesterday I was asked to share a customer experience. At first I was sure I had nothing interesting to share, except whether you should get that dental work done this year or wait til your benefits renew in January. But I am happy to say I get to help women get in touch with their style...with clothes, accessories and flowers on their most special day.

Weekly Dose of...Phobias

An appropriate feature for the Hallow-week. Even if we can’t admit to it, we all have at least one uncontrollable, irrational fear of a specific object, situation, or activity. A phobia can haunt your subconscious mind, or be debilitating enough to take control of your life. Maybe you fear graveyards, tunnels, washing your hands, or snow. Or maybe you fear something more superficial that doesn’t interfere with your daily activities, perhaps hanging on from your childhood that just won’t let go.

To this day, my childhood phobia creeps in whenever I participate in fun loving aquatic activities. Yes, I grew up in the Jaws era and I tell you, it certainly had an impact on my water phobia. You see, I can’t even swim in a fresh water lake without wondering what lurks beneath even though I know sharks need salt water. I hear the theme song, I envision swimmers scrambling to shore and pulling themselves out of the water just in time. And, just in case this fear wasn’t cemented in my mind for all eternity from the movie, my parents took me to Universal Studios in 1986. I was perfectly happy to stop the tour at the Amityville house, but no, we took a trip to the Jaws set and rode a boat past the mechanical shark that in turn jumped out of the water and tried to snap our head off. It was creepy to say the least and not helpful. Thanks Mom and Dad.

I doubt I will ever overcome this phobia, although it does get better each year. In fact, in 1999 I was able to attempt surfing in Hawaii for all of 5 minutes. Keeping all body parts out of the water while grasping the board and allowing my teacher to remain full bodied in the water (prepared for the onslaught of sharks that awaited us at dawn), I caught my first (and last) wave into shore and I was out of there (taking pics of my husband as an excuse not to return - no hon, you go ahead, seriously, I had fun - let me take some photoes...crap, was that a fin? ). Last year I tried to wakeboard and told myself that the board would be the first bite, not me, and that I could then swim to safety.

So we all have phobias, and this week is a good time to get in touch with them, explore the links behind them and try your best to let go of them. I am trying but the scars are deep. Please readers, do share your phobias and let me know that I am not the only one!

Channeling Martha

We like to get in touch with our domestic side and create things that make us feel like we are fulfilling our Motherly duties. This is especially true in the Fall. With the abundance of apple cider, pumpkin pie and farm festivals in the Midwest, it’s hard to resist channeling Martha Stewart. So one Autumn afternoon as we meandered through a corn maze with our children, Stephanie began maniacally gathering corn husks. We were on a mission, but this wouldn’t do. After picking pumpkins, she spied something near the farmhouse and disappeared. Five minutes later she reappeared with another women carrying two huge corn husks at least 7 feet tall and a barrel of hay. Never mind that we had five children plus ourselves to get home, but we hoisted the first husk into the air and pushed it through the back of the minivan over the seat, SCORE - it fit . The other was a tight squeeze, but we managed to get it in (excluding the fifth back seat in the process). Determined to leave no child (or corn husk) behind, we place the youngest child on the lap of the oldest and buckled them in the back, next to the corn husks. Then we were off, giggling and squealing like ten year olds as we made our way home, spying our cramped “children of the corn” through the rearview mirror. Luckily it was a short 25 mph drive home.

We waited two days after this tiring adventure to create our Autumn Scarecrow decked out in the perfect Midwestern farm attire, denim. I think Steph and I had more fun putting it together than the kids did (they left us for a corn fight). Although it didn’t turn out as good as the image in our minds (Martha would not be pleased), we finished it and decided to use the decoration front and center in our first blog sweepstakes. You Look Pretty Cute...For A Mom.

I have not really paid much attention to fashion over the years, usually wearing what’s affordable and comfortable. (Yes, that was me in some of the eighties pictures and I guess if they had fashion police at the time they would have arrested me: “guilty as charged”.) So as I’m beginning to approach my mid thirties I’ve started to become a bit more conscious of what I wear, realizing that at times my clothes do make some sort of statement of who I am and who I still feel like on the inside.

I was told the other day by one of my classmates that I looked pretty cute...for a mom. (She’s about eighteen and cute as a button, mind you.) I was taken back by this comment because I don’t feel like a mom, in fact when I wear this shirt by Magenta, I feel twenty one again and ready to hit the town with my friends. My arms, thighs, and derriere may giggle a bit more than they use to, but I’m still gonna shake what my momma gave me! That’s what a certain article of clothing can do for the psyche. I love finding trendy and affordable clothing that makes me look as young as I still feel.

Weekly Dose of...Proper Peeping

Last week Michelle touched on a subject very dear to me, shoes. I love the peep toe trend. It is a wonderful, classic look that can make just about any foot sexy. It's great to see feminine fashions that make us daydream about how fabulous we are.

A question I have asked myself (and you may have as well)... Is it acceptable to wear stockings with peep toe shoes? Sources say, yes. Style Bakery says to keep it simple. There are a couple guidelines. Sheer and opaque hose are both acceptable. If you are wearing a sheer stocking, sandal foot is a must. As we move into the cooler months, take advantage of this trend to hide your not-so-tan legs and any other imperfections that may take away from the star of your ensemble...your amazing peep toe shoes.

For myself, I am still working to embrace this trend reversal. I may need more positive fashion re-programming as memories of my grandmother's neighbor haunt me. She would wear open toe shoes and sandals with reinforced toe hose that would gather around her ankles. (she was probably holding on to a fashion guideline of her younger years when it was appropriate to always wear hose with a skirt or dress). As a child I instinctively knew this was wrong and I still have flashbacks, even if it is on a model in fabulous shoes.

Not Just For Yoga

I am all about a versatile and comfortable wardrobe. I like to mix and match using some creativity to prevent clothing boredom. Little did I know how handy my Beyond Yoga pants would be.

They have become a main staple lately. They look great and feel even better. The first time I put them on I said out loud "Hello my new friend." My husband was in the room and gave an unprompted compliment to my booty (which needs all the help shaping and lifting as possible).

Besides being the perfect pant for yoga class, I find it hard not to lounge in them. Thankfully they have made a great pair for wearing to my office job as well. I started safe pairing them with ballet flats and layers on top. Last week I got a little adventurous and wore my Beyond Yoga pants with pointy kitten heel boots and a long sweater. I was so comfortable...even at my computer in my little cube all day!

Maxim Mag is Ugly

I never liked Maxim Magazine and now I have a really good reason not to. Their recent top 10 Most Unappealing Ladies is so shallow. I mean come on, listing Ugly Betty as Number 8...wow, how creative, wish I would have thought of that one.

Of course, Maxim is a borderline porn mag so this article doesn't surprise me. I only wish I had some pictures of the men that work at Maxim and maybe I could do my own spread on the 10 Most Unappealing Editors at Maxim. Don't mess with the Ladies.

Weekly Dose Of...Obsessions

It started with page 237 of the Lucky Mag October Issue. I know I told y'all that I hadn't picked up a fashion mag in a few weeks so this is what happens when I do. I think it happens to all of us at some moment, maybe only once, maybe several times per day, but don't deny it...IT does happen. The obsession. Oh yeah, I got it bad, really bad. It's not often that a pair of $645 shoes comes along that I fall in love with. The perfect pair of peep toe, patent leather heels that are a bit funky, retro and will never go out of style (my style at least). I can wear them with jeans, skirts, trousers, maybe capris and shorts? Heck yes, I would!

A compulsive preoccupation and unreasonable idea indeed. I need them, I want them...I picture myself strolling along the Avenue Marceau in mid-autumn, smiling and stealing glances of les garcons, swaying to and fro in my strapless frock with swingy a-line skirt. The parisian girls glaring in spite of my fabulous, albeit American style.

Hah! My four year old's screams of "I want more apple juice please" slaps me back into reality - at least she said please. So I continue to rationalize the obsession telling my husband that these shoes are timeless and that I can wear them with anything...and I MEAN ANYTHING (hint, hint, wink, wink). So maybe I am deserving of a $645 Christmas present this year, huh? Besides, I have never before in my lifetime spent this much on a pair of shoes. Come to think of it, I haven't spent this much on ALL of the shoes I have sitting in my closet right now.

But seriously, I won't buy these shoes (unless I find them on Smartbargains or DesignerExposure next year for under $100 bucks), but I will obsess about them. I will write about them and tell my friends about them. I will dream about them and each time I put together the perfect outfit and am missing the "perfect shoes" I will sadly think of them.

And in turn, I will be on to another obsession within the next week or so. Maybe this time I can obsess about global warming or feeding the hungry and not be so shallow.

I Am Aware

Some of us breeze through October without giving much thought to the significance of the month. I see "Think Pink" statements and warehouses full of prettily colored merchandise in support of a worthy cause. I think of Susan G Komen and women who will never be able to breast feed a child. But most of all, I think of my Step-Mother. She survived breast cancer and 6 years later is still cancer free. I feel regret that I was not very close to her at the time as I lived 1,000 miles away. And truth be told, our family had some issues with the "Step Family" that my Father had grown to love while his "real" children slipped between the couch cushions. To this day, I still regret that I didn't at least send a card or a thoughtful email directly to my Step-Mom while she was enduring the cancer. I hid behind my Father and swept my emotion under the rug because after all, she wasn't my Mother. But, she was someone's Mother, Daughter, Sister and still is due to early detection and proper treatment. She will forever be on medication, she will have a difficult time getting new insurance if she ever leaves her job, and I'm sure she fears that it may return, someday. Being a part of her life has made me more aware of breast cancer and the pain it causes women and their families.

I love feminine looking tops and dresses but they honestly don't fit my style. You will never see me sporting those big bows that are so trendy right now and I usually shy away from ruffles. My style is more classic and clean but distinctly urban and modern. So I was extremely shocked to have found a ruffled blouse that I would actually wear. Weekly Dose of...Guilty Pleasures

I so enjoyed last weeks 'Dose of the 80s'. I started thinking about the simple things in life that bring joy, comfort and fond memories. Many of these pleasantries fall into a category I would consider 'guilty pleasures'.

A guilty pleasure is something or someone that you find irresistible, enjoyable and momentarily satisfying...and some of them may be a tad embarrassing. These things are for gratification, not usually for enrichment.

A perfect example would be my personal favorite reality show 'The Bachelor'. So staged, over dramatic and so easy to watch. This pairs well with some of my favorite reading material 'US Weekly' and other waiting room finds.

While I am confessing some of my own 'guilty pleasures' I might as well say I sing along to John Melloncamp because I know all of the words to his songs but don't own an album (I call him "The Coug"). Marky Mark is a babe and I also love perfume samples at the department stores and am thrilled they now have a spray dispense.

I find no shame in my love for shopping. Specifically for bargains. Shoes, and unique clothing are my favorites. I love scouring the sale racks for items I couldn't leave the store or site with out purchasing. My absolute favorite sale section to shop is at Anthropologie - eclectic and creative looks that inspire. Kennedy and Kate has great sales on usually pricey name brands and pieces you won't find everywhere.

I am sure as you read this 'Weekly Dose' you are searching your mind for your own guilty pleasures. Enjoy them and please feel safe to share them with your friends at Lady Language.

Spring 2008 Forecast

No surprises for the Spring/Summer 2008 fashion season. The Daily Fashion Report from Marilyn Kirschner states :“Unsurprisingly, the ‘news’ is in color, prints, transparency, looser dresses, softer pants, sleeveless jackets, jersey, chiffon, embellishment, and special occasion dressing”

Fashion seems to be in a state of status quo due to the upcoming election, economic uncertainty, and perpetual state of war. This opens the door allowing you to find the styles that work well with your personality and body type. Don’t try to look like someone your not because you will always be uncomfortable and uncertain of yourself. Here are some key points to the Spring 2008 season:

1. Color - brights are big, but not electric and soft neutrals will be a key counterpoint. We are seeing a lot of mango and banana, bright sea blue and greens, misty pinks and vintage reds, but on the flip side, navy seems to be selling well (a tip from my New York rep). The colors are uplifting and cheerful.

2. Prints - bold graphics, artsy and floral still reign. Look for styles that emulate Emilio Pucci, Christian LaCroix, Diane von Furstenburg and newcomer Tibi. Scout thrift shops for originals or affordable boutiques who know how to find current translations of these styles.

3. Transparency - sheer, chiffon, layered over a basic tank dress is beautifully feminine and not going away

4. Women still want fun, pretty dresses that are easy to wear and jersey meets this requirement nicely.

5. Focus on simple, classic looks and clean lines. Silhouettes from the 40s/60s/80s will linger, but make way for simplistic and futuristic shapes.

6. Say goodbye to uber layering, clean up your act, start coordinating and lighten up
